Are Porcelain Veneers Right for You?

Veneers

Most of us have something we’d like to change about our smile. Maybe you wish your teeth were a shade whiter. Maybe you have a gap between two teeth, or a chipped tooth you’d like repaired. These small fixes can make a big impact on your smile, so it’s no surprise that many people consider getting porcelain veneers to perfect their teeth.

While veneers can correct several dental issues – including broken teeth, discoloration, and irregularly-shaped teeth – this procedure isn’t right for everyone. How do you know if it’s right for you? Let’s look closely at veneers, their benefits, and their drawbacks.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin, permanent covers that sit atop your natural teeth. At Oradent Associates, we offer patients porcelain veneers, though they can sometimes be made of composite resin at other offices. These covers can help restore tooth enamel and generally improve the look of your smile.

How They Work

The process of getting them takes a few visits to your dentist’s office. At your first visit, your dentist takes an impression of your teeth (it’s best to get at least two veneers side by side, as this will look more natural).

Then, your dentist will prepare your teeth for the veneers by shaving down part of the enamel and fitting you with a temporary set of teeth. You’ll wear these temporary teeth for a week or two while the lab creates your permanent, porcelain set.

Once they are ready, you will return to your dentist’s office for a second visit. Here, your dentist will adhere the veneers to your teeth with dental cement, ensuring the most natural-looking fit and placement. A special light helps the cement dry, and then you’re ready to show your new smile to the world!

The Pros

There are many benefits to getting porcelain veneers. Firstly, these little shells can help restore damaged tooth enamel. This means that your teeth will be stronger after they are in place – and the shells can protect your teeth from sensitivity.

Secondly, porcelain veneers are more stain-resistant than natural teeth. While they won’t be completely stain-free (particularly if you’re a smoker or avid coffee drinker), they tend to look a bit brighter and whiter.

Finally, veneers can give your confidence a major boost. Because they are custom made, your dentist can use them to correct your greatest insecurities about your smile – and once your smile looks better, you are more likely to show it off! If you find yourself embarrassed or insecure about your smile, veneers are a quick and easy way to correct the problem.

The Cons

While veneers are very popular these days, this procedure is not always right for everyone. One of the greatest drawbacks to them is the high cost; a 2017 survey from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry revealed that the average cost was $1,313… per tooth! If you’re looking to improve your smile on a budget, veneers might not be your best bet.

Additionally, they are not ideal for patients with gum disease or similar dental conditions. This is because the teeth underneath your veneers are still subject to decay. If the tooth under a veneer rots, it is very difficult to replace; it usually requires a root canal or crown, which can cost you even more.
